Pilgrims have navigated the route to this ethereal site for many centuries, and it’s here that Thomas Becket was infamously slaughtered at the order of Henry II – although this series of events has been contested by countless historians. The city is home to one of the UK’s most spectacular cathedrals. The story of Canterbury that schoolchildren learn, however, comes from the medieval period, courtesy of Chaucer. Prehistoric settlements have been uncovered in this corner of Kent, and it was a popular haunt of the Romans, who surrounded the early city by constructing an earth bank and fortified walls around 130 acres of land. The worst part: these titles don’t seem to need a reissue at this moment, and there are so many others we’re on the fringe of losing that could use a good marketing campaign. They seem to be widely available (I’ve seen all three at several local bookstores). They are compact and sturdy, the size of a mass-market paperback but the feel of a trade paperback. Apparently at this point there are three titles available: The Unbearable Lightness of Being, Jonathan Safran Foer’s Everything is Illuminated (the title of which comes from that first small section of The Unbearable Lightness of Being that I mentioned above), and Michael Chabon’s The Mysteries of Pittsburgh (does this one have anything to do with the other titles?). Now, with Harper Perennial’s limited edition, I finally found that The Unbearable Lightness of Being was the book I couldn’t pass up at the bookstore.Ī quick word about the limited edition, which I knew about only because I saw an advertisement in the New York Review of Books. Consequently, I’ve read the first small section dozens of times but knew little about the rest of the book. There just always seemed to be another book that felt more urgent and more likely to be missed if not purchased instead. Here’s another book I’ve often pulled from the bookstore shelf, only to put it back, sometimes even after I’ve already gotten in line to purchase it. We may resent the plutocrats of Wall Street but, as Ferguson argues, the evolution of finance has rivaled the importance of any technological innovation in the rise of civilization. The Ascent of Money reveals finance as the backbone of history, casting a new light on familiar events: the Renaissance enabled by Italian foreign exchange dealers, the French Revolution traced back to a stock market bubble, the 2008 crisis traced from America's bankruptcy capital, Memphis, to China's boomtown, Chongqing. The 10th anniversary edition, with new chapters on the crash, Chimerica, and cryptocurrency In this updated edition, Niall Ferguson brings his classic financial history of the world up to the present day, tackling the populist backlash that followed the 2008 crisis, the descent of "Chimerica" into a trade war, and the advent of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, with his signature clarity and expert lens. The author shows that finance is, in fact, the foundation of human progress. Ferguson tells the human story behind the evolution of money, from its origins in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest Wall Street upheavals. And, oddly, the second YA novel I’ve read recently where signing is a main character’s primary means of communicating: Frances Hardinge’s Deeplight was the other. So reading Pet and finding that Jam – a transgender girl – is also bilingual between sign language and voiced language is wonderful and touching. It comes out on some of the words she has trouble pronouncing, or when she is really tired or ill. She is having a lot of support and help and intervention and her spoken language has now caught up, but the sign language is still there. She was almost entirely reliant on sign language – which I had to try to teach myself in order to teach her – when she began school. My daughter – who is now six – has an unidentified speech and communication delay. Now I have to make an admission here: I am biased. Jam and her best friend Redemption go on a hunt through Lucille to find and deal with a monster, aided by the hulking form of Pet. The story focuses on the town of Lucille in a unnamed country and, as so many Young Adult novels do, follows a young adult protagonist: Jam – one of the most vivid and alive characters I’ve come across recently. This is one of those books that leave you in absolute awe. They show a Marilyn Monroe unsparing in her analysis of her own life, but also playful, funny, and impossibly charming. Jotted in notebooks, typed on paper, or written on hotel letterhead, these texts reveal a woman who loved deeply and strove to perfect her craft. Fragments is an unprecedented collection of written artifacts-notes to herself, letters, even poems-in Marilyn’s own handwriting, never before published, along with rarely seen intimate photos. Now, for the first time, readers can meet the private Marilyn and understand her in a way we never have before. Her serious gifts as an actor were sometimes eclipsed by her notoriety-and by the way the camera fell helplessly in love with her.īeyond the headlines-and the too-familiar stories of heartbreak and desolation-was a woman far more curious, searching, witty, and hopeful than the one the world got to know. Every word and gesture made headlines and garnered controversy. Marilyn’s image is so universal that we can’t help but believe we know all there is to know of her. Fragments is an event-an unforgettable book that will redefine one of the greatest icons of the twentieth century and that, nearly fifty years after her death, will definitively reveal Marilyn Monroe’s humanity. The film also stars Skeet Ulrich, who appeared in As Good As It Gets and Scream, and the acclaimed young singer Jewel in her film debut. As the war progresses, two of the fighters a former slave portrayed by Tony Award winner Jeffrey Wright and the son of an immigrant worker Pleasantville’s Tobey Maguire find they have more in common with each other than with their comrades, who begin to suspect them of treason. Following up on the success of Lee’s The Ice Storm, for which Schamus was awarded Best Screenplay at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival, Ride with the Devil adapted from Daniel Woodrell’s novel tells the epic story of a group of young Bushwhackers, the Missouri guerrilla fighters who waged a desperate and bloody battle against Union occupiers during the Civil War. Ride with the Devil continues writer producer James Schamus’s collaboration with Ang Lee, who also directed Sense and Sensibility. A riveting civil war epic, from the award winning screenwriter of The Ice Storm. It speaks to the tender love of a mother and her child to the unforgettable screams which echoed through the corridors as babies were taken against the parent's will and to a mystery which continues to this day, as so many still search to know where, and to whom, they belong. Part memoir, part detective story, Belonging is both a personal account - of identity, beginnings and Catherine's search for her own mother's lost story - and a recounting of her forensic crusade on behalf of the lost babies of Tuam. But who were these lost children, and what had happened to them in the care of the Bons Secours order of nuns? Determined to know more, Catherine's painstaking research led to a quest for justice that continues still as, often against fierce resistance, she brought to light a terrible truth that shocked the world, impacted the Vatican, and led to a Commission of Investigation in Ireland. Uncovering no less than 796 missing burial records of children born there, the stark truth of their place of rest became clear: a disused sewage tank on the old home site, where two boys had once stumbled upon bones. Catherine Corless could not have known where her interest in local history would lead her, as she began researching the Tuam Mother and Baby Home in Galway in 2010. ONE WOMAN, THE SECRETS OF A SMALL TOWN, AND A QUEST FOR JUSTICE THAT ROCKED A NATION. When a terrifying new breed of vampire is sighted outside of the city, Remy prepares to investigate alone. Though the kingdom of Aluria barely tolerates him, Remy's father has been shaping him into a weapon to fight for the kingdom at any cost. His mother was the subject of gossip even before she eloped with a vampire, giving rise to the rumors that Remy is half-vampire himself. Remy Pendergast is many things: the only son of the Duke of Valenbonne (though his father might wish otherwise), an elite bounty hunter of rogue vampires, and an outcast among his fellow Reapers. “Full of court intrigue, queer romance, and terrifying monsters-this gothic epic fantasy will appeal to fans of Samantha Shannon's The Priory of the Orange Tree and the adult animated series Castlevania.
