It is Event Horizon, but 8 miles below the ocean’s surface. If I had to describe it quickly, The Deep is aquatic horror meets Lovecraftian convergence of otherworldly things. This combines elements of the other two novels of his I have read, as it does body horror and ancient unfathomable evil equally. Knowing I would enjoy it, I grabbed The Deep on a trip to Barnes and Noble. His pages are packed full of detail, while being so bleak and hopeless at the same time. Cutter has become a favorite author of mine over the last year, as his style is written so viscerally. I picked this up after reading Nick Cutter’s other two books The Troop and Little Heaven, both absolutely terrifying and phenomenal books. What follows is a claustrophobic, dark look at the limits of the human psyche, isolationism, and how the planet we live on holds secrets much more ancient and evil than we can fathom. After months, the station stops communicating and two people are dispatched to find out what has happened. Following a global outbreak of a disease that makes people forget things until their bodies stop functioning, a team of scientists are dispatched to the bottom of the Mariana’s Trench to study a potential cure.

The Hellbound Heart by Clive Barker 4.07 avg. Roughly 20 years has passed after Kirsty first met Pinhead. Kirsty then starred as the hero of the 2011 Boom! She was then featured as a hero in the Hellraiser film franchise, first appearing in the first Hellraiser film, and then reappearing in Hellraiser II, Hellraiser III, and Hellseeker. Hellbound Heart was one of the first things Ive read by him and fucking loved it. Kirsty Cotton first appeared as a character in Clive Barker's novella The Hellbound Heart. When I used this this last one for Sudasa, I had to make sure that it was REALLY clear that a life married to a boy she hates would be emotional death. This last one can be hard to pull off as it requires that you convince the reader that it will really occur. He defines death in three ways: 1) actual physical death, 2) professional death (in YA this might be called death in stature, ie, a place on the basketball team), and 3) emotional death. In fact, according to James a character’s stakes must always be death. The stakes are what keeps the reader reading. But without high stakes, what is the point? Why should a reader invest themselves in this story or character? LM: I just searched through my sent email for the phrase “the stakes” and it does, indeed, seem to be one of those things I’m constantly talking about with you guys. In the case of my own book, 5 TO 1, Sudasa’s stakes are a life of misery married to a boy she hates. For example, if Harry Potter doesn’t defeat Voldemort, he will die, so his stakes are death. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the term, a character’s stakes are what he has to lose if he doesn’t meet his goal. HB: One of the things Lauren often reminds me is to increase the stakes in my novel. I actually still have another like 50 titles I can add, but this would be posted at the end of the month at the rate I’m going. (If you’re looking for a specific genre, Ctrl + F is your friend.) You’ll find a little of everything here and, of course, a whole lot of YA and contemporary romance. When I started, I already knew this was going to be a complete list, but shoutout to all the Asian authors out there because there are a lot of you!įrom picture books to cookbooks, memoirs to sci-fi, Asian authors are writing any and everything, and this list is just a small representative of that. I can count on one hand the number of Asian authors I read growing up, so what I thought might be a fun quick project quickly turned into a daunting endeavor as I started working on this post. And if you know of more please tell me/send me!!- Vanessa Chan February 27, 2023Īs publishing is getting more diverse, we’re getting to hear more Asian voices, which is definitely worth celebrating for Asian Heritage Month. Frustrating I have seen no written roundup in media so here's a start. There is a lot of exceptionally brilliant Southeast Asian-authored books coming in 2023 (and 2024!) and it makes my heart so happy to see it. Despite the building’s structural deficiencies, the former hospital is revealed as an important hub of spiritual energy. When we meet Vale, she abruptly leaves a church retreat to visit her half-sister in rural Florida where she is drawn to an old tuberculosis sanitorium laden with ghosts and decay. Engaging in witchy practices her family considers evil, she is challenged to accept her true self. Vale’s character is grounded in the questioning of her Catholic upbringing and desire to carve her own path in the world. Gaby Triana writes a haunting story of self-discovery in her novel, Moon Child, which focuses on Valencia-Vale to her friends-a Cuban-American teen on the cusp of adulthood. These reviews highlight women-POC and white-and their personal horrors that are intensified by the supernatural. From those stories, horror is used to reflect on and discuss sensitive social and cultural issues. But horror has many authors and storylines to share with readers beyond the straight white male. While these movies and books have made a lasting impression on the genre, they are often dominated by a straight white male view-demonizing and objectifying not only marginalized communities but cis het white women as well. When most people think of horror, they may think of Stephen King or the bloody slasher movies from the ’80s. |
